MULTIMEDIA AND PHOTOGRAPHY SHOOTOUT 
THEME: DIVERSITY IN CHICAGO
 
Put your skills to the test for this live multimedia and photography competition during the Unity Convention. Contestants can go out into Chicago to either photograph and/or work on a multimedia project with the theme: 
“DIVERSITY IN CHICAGO.” Contestants can enter both competitions. Any Unity attendee is eligible for the competition. (Design ShootOut has been canceled.)
 
PRIZES: Approximately $6,000 in prize money and other prizes will be awarded.
First place: Canon digital camera; $500 in cash donated by VTF NABJ.
Second place: Canon digital camera; $250 in cash by VTF NABJ.
Additional prizes include $1,000 in San Disk cards and $1,000 in ThinkTankPhoto.com camera bags.
 
ASSIGNMENT: “DIVERSITY IN CHICAGO.” Chicago is one of the most diverse ethnic city in America. Each Chicago neighborhood is very unique. There are several sections of  African-American, Asian, Hispanic and Native American communities in Chicago. Each photographer/multimedia journalist must select  a different diverse group other than his/her own. (Example: African-American photographer must photograph an Asian community, Hispanic or a Native American community.)

MEETING: It is recommended (but not required) that contestants and multimedia mentors attend a special Photography & Multimedia ShootOut meeting at 10am on Wednesday, July 23 in the VTF room (McCormick Place West W476). All the rules and theme ideas will be explained at the meeting.
 
COMPUTER LAB TIME: The Mac Computer Lab will be available on: 
Thursday from 11:30am to 2pm; Friday from 9am to noon (deadline).
 
DEADLINE: Friday, noon, in the VTF room (McCormick Place West W476).
 
LIVE JUDGING & AWARDS: Friday 1:30pm in the VTF room. (McCormick Place West W476)  Winners will be announced at the VTF Awards Ceremony on Friday at 1:30 pm in the VTF room after each judging session. 
 
GEAR: Please bring your own camera, audio gear, video camera and laptop. There will be limited number of audio recorders available sponsored by Olympus. 
 
LEGAL STATEMENTS: 
By entering, I hereby certify that I am the only copyright holder or have been fully authorized by the copyright holder with regard to the material herewith submitted with any images/multimedia package which were created during the Unity Photography and Multimedia ShootOut Competition. I give permission for the use of my entry material in the exhibition, Unity web sites, awards ceremony and for the promotion of Unity and its activities, without any remuneration.
 
FAQs:
Who can enter? Anyone who attends Unity. Judges ineligible to enter contest.  
Judges criteria?  A judging panel chooses the winners based on quality, assignment execution and story-telling consistency. 
Cost? None
RSVP? None
What is the Unity Photography & Multimedia Competition? A live competition for those attending the Unity Convention.
Where can I shoot, video tape, record? Anywhere in Chicago. 
What  equipment do I need to enter? Each entrant will need to bring own equipment. There will be limited audio recorders provided by Olympus.
Camera loaners? None
Do I need to attend meeting to enter? No. But is recommended.
 
PHOTOGRAPHY SHOOTOUT RULES:
Contestants can go out to shoot pictures starting on Wednesday, July 23 and enter up to five of their best photographs. Deadline is noon on Friday, July 25.  Any Unity attendee can enter pictures shot anywhere in the Chicago area that best illustrate the theme.
 
Limit of five photo entries maximum per entrant. Photo essay counts as one entry. Images can be any size, but must be .jpg format. All images should be toned and cropped. If you need help with toning, captions, or any step, please ask one of the ShootOut coordinators.
 
Each file must have your first and last name with .jpg at end of file. Put the number of photos, with a maximum of five, at the end of your name. 
(Example: Milbert Brown images should look like this: milbertbrown1.jpg; milbertbrown2.jpg; milbertbrown3.jpg; milbertbrown4.jpg; milbertbrown5.jpg.)
 
Photo essays should be in separate folder with your first and last name. Maximum 12 images in photo essay folder.  Include a summary about the body of work in the first image of the essay in File Info. Also include full captions on all of the photos in the body of work.  

Captions should be clear and concise. Each caption should include—“The Journalistic five W’s”  (who, what, when, where and why). Captions should be written and saved in the Photoshop application “File Info.”

 
Entrant’s name, email address, cell phone, hotel phone number and room number should be in “File Info.” Entries can be submitted on thumb drive, CD, CF or SD cards.
 
MULTIMEDIA SHOOTOUT RULES:
Contestants can also go out to shoot pictures, video and gather audio starting  anytime on Wednesday, July 23 and submit one multimedia piece. Deadline is noon on Friday, July 25. Any Unity attendee can enter a multimedia piece that best illustrates the theme shot anywhere in the Chicago area. Contestants can work in teams of 2-3 on a mentor/team basis. Teams will be organized at Wednesday’s meeting.
 
Limit one multimedia piece of a maximum of two minutes. On a Word document, include entrant’s name, email address, cell phone, hotel phone number and room number. Entries can be submitted on thumb drive, CD, CF or SD cards. Place all info into one folder with your first and last name. (Example: Natalie Guillen’s folder name is: Natalie Guillen.) There is no Internet connection inside VTF room. Do not submit web site link.
 
Entrant’s name, email address, cell phone, hotel phone number and room number should be in “File Info” or on Word program inside the folder.
